After tweeting that he murdered a fox with a baseball bat on Boxing Day, prominent Remain supporter Jolyon Maugham is now under investigation by the RSPCA.
A prominent advocate for the Leave camp, who claimed on Twitter to have killed a fox with a baseball bat, is now the subject of an investigation by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
According to a tweet posted by Jolyon Maugham QC on Boxing Day, he “slaughtered the animal” in the legal appeal to force Boris Johnson to seek a Brexit extension.
On Thursday morning he penned: “I used a baseball bat to dispatch a fox earlier today. Can I ask how your Boxing Day is going?”
Mr. Maugham said the fox “was caught up in the protective netting around the chickens” and that he “wasn’t sure what else to do.”
He first stood by his views, but after receiving a barrage of criticism from Twitter users, he issued an apology.
To quote what he had to say: “Anyone who was offended by my tweet has my apologies. Although I felt better after killing the fox, I still wanted it gone as soon as possible because of the anguish it caused to my chicks.”
A representative for the RSPCA said, “We are looking into this.”
Twitter users tagged the RSPCA in Mr. Maugham’s message, prompting the RSPCA to issue a “distressing” statement on the matter.
If a fox is caught in a trap or snare on private land, the owner is required to “humanely kill any fox you catch while it is in the trap or snare,” under government regulations.
Foxes cannot be killed by gassing or poisoning.
