Neal, who took the medal onstage with Wilson and fellow winner (for cosmetics) Sergio Lopez-Rivera, thanked their forefathers for their hard work and perseverance. As Jamika and I shatter this barrier, I find myself filled with hope for the future:
“I can envision Black trans women standing up here, and our Asian sisters, our Latina sisters, and our Indigenous ladies. Someday, I know, it won’t be so remarkable or out of the ordinary. Eventually, it will become the new normal.
Wilson said backstage, “I’ve noticed there are more African Americans on set, and it’s been occurring,” and Neal agreed, saying, “I think everybody wants diversity, and I think everybody benefits from diversity.” Therefore, we have high hopes for the future.
Lopez-Rivera summed up the issue of diversity on set by saying, “We look forward to the time when these problems are moot.”
The film’s hair and wig designer, Neal, won for the first time, as did Viola Davis’ personal hairstylist, Wilson, and Viola Davis’ personal makeup artist, Lopez-Rivera.
Wilson and Davis have collaborated on several projects, including the TV shows Widows and How to Get Away with Murder. Neal has been nominated for an Emmy this year for her work on both Uncut Gems and Pose.
