His parents Virginia and James divorced when he was seven years old. His mother raised Dave and his younger sister. Age 12 is when Dave started playing guitar.
When he was fed up with traditional instruction, he decided to teach himself. In the summer of their thirteenth year, Dave and Lisa went to Chicago to stay with their cousin Tracy. Tracy introduced Dave and Lisa to punk rock throughout the summer of that year. In 1982, he performed at Chicago’s legendary Cubby Bear Pub with Naked Raygun, his first show. He was a teen at the time.
He was elected vice president of his freshman class at Thomas Jefferson High School. She took him to Bishop Ireton High School after discovering that he had been consuming marijuana. He got the audition by lying about his age, so when he got the job offer, he was shocked. He dropped out of high school in his junior year. While on tour, he played on two studio albums and several live records with the band.
He became friends with Buzz Osborne of the Melvins while playing drums with Scream. Kurt Cobain and Kris Novoselic were treated to a screening of Scream by Osbourn one night. Cobain and Novoselic’s band Nirvana was looking for a new drummer around the time Scream broke up.

“Nevermind” was recorded in Sound City Studios in Los Angeles during the spring of 1991 (as shown by Dave Grohl 2013 documentary Sound City). “Nevermind” defied all expectations when it was released in 1991 and became a worldwide economic success.
To cope with the pain of losing Kurt Cobain and the breakup of Nirvana in 1994, Dave spent six days recording solo material. Each instrument on the recordings was performed by him, and he also recorded them all. Upon completion, he made 100 cassette recordings and handed them to friends.
The Foo Fighters nickname was chosen because he didn’t want his name to appear on those recordings. Capitol Records signed Dave after hearing one of these demo recordings, thinking the tunes were written by a complete band. As a result of this technique, the Foo Fighters were established and have since achieved great success in the music industry.
With the Foo Fighters, Grohl has released nine studio albums. Many Grammys have been nominated and millions of albums have been sold throughout the world by the band. Grohl has also performed with Queens of the Stone Age and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as a guest musician.

He has appeared on SNL more times than any other musician since 1992. Aside from Nirvana, he has performed with Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures and Mick Jagger. In 2013, Grohl made his directorial debut with a documentary about the history of Sound City, a legendary recording studio in Van Nuys, California.
Earlier this year, Grohl was the man behind the camera for the HBO documentary Sonic Highways. The Foo Fighters’ eighth studio album, “The Division Bell,” featured a remix of the song. “It’s a love letter to American music history,” Grohl said. As a series of eight Grohl interviews, each episode focuses on a different place in the United States and examines its musical history.
A new documentary on band van tours is in the works, according to Grohl, who announced it in the early months of 2020.
