He was elected vice president of his freshman class at Thomas Jefferson High School. She took him to Bishop Ireton High School after discovering that he had been consuming marijuana. In December 1985, Grohl, who was 16 at the time, joined the hardcore punk band Dain Bramage. It was in March 1987 that Grohl departed the group to join the local band, Scream. Grohl was just 17 years old when he auditioned to play drums for Scream, a prominent punk band in Washington, D.C. He got the audition by lying about his age, so when he got the job offer, he was shocked. He dropped out of high school in his junior year. While on tour, he played on two studio albums and several live records with the band.
He became friends with Buzz Osborne of the Melvins while playing drums with Scream. Kurt Cobain and Kris Novoselic were treated to a screening of Scream by Osbourn one night. Cobain and Novoselic’s band Nirvana was looking for a new drummer around the time Scream broke up.

When Nirvana was looking for a drummer, Osbourne gave Grohl the names of Cobain and Novoselic. Grohl was approached to audition for the band in Seattle and accepted the opportunity. The rest of the story has been written.
“Nevermind” was recorded in Sound City Studios in Los Angeles during the spring of 1991 (as shown by Dave Grohl 2013 documentary Sound City). “Nevermind” defied all expectations when it was released in 1991 and became a worldwide economic success.
To cope with the pain of losing Kurt Cobain and the breakup of Nirvana in 1994, Dave spent six days recording solo material. Each instrument on the recordings was performed by him, and he also recorded them all. Upon completion, he made 100 cassette recordings and handed them to friends.
The Foo Fighters nickname was chosen because he didn’t want his name to appear on those recordings.
