German equestrian dressage rider D. Schneider came out on top of her Olympic qualification group on Sunday just weeks after a terrible tragedy in which the horse she was riding died and she shattered a collar bone.
D. Schneider is part of a formidable Germany team includes Isabell Werth, the most decorated equestrian Olympian, and Jessica von Bredow-Werndl, the top scorer in Saturday’s qualifying. Germany are among the favourites for team and individual gold on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“To begin, let me say how incredibly grateful I am to be a part of such an outstanding and formidable group of athletes. “There is pressure, to be sure, but I see it as constructive,” D. Schneider told the press.
D. Schneider’s horse died in April, during the worst epidemic of the deadly equine horse virus and the human coronavirus.
“First the Equine Virus, then the Accident, it was Hard to Believe…
To be really forthright, I initially was unable to discuss the matter. However, I was able to solve the problem in my head. I talked about it a lot with my spouse and with a mental coach and it’s necessary to worth through this,” D. Schneider told reporters.
After a three-week break, she got back on her horse.
You don’t forget anything like that ever, so it’s always lurking in the recesses of your mind. Unfortunately, it’s nowhere to be seen in this area.
I have mentally regained the upper hand.
D. Schneider rode Showtime on Sunday, a horse which took part in no contests in 2020, and they had little time to prepare.
