United, Manchester City, Liverpool, and champions Chelsea all found out their round of 16 opponents on Monday morning in Nyon, only to have the draw redone due to two obvious technical errors.

Due to an oversight, the Red Devils had to go through the drawing process again to find out who they would be playing when the season resumed in February.

Why did this Occur?

In the group stage, Villarreal and United met twice, with United taking both matches. They won 2-1 at Old Trafford and 2-0 at El Madrigal.

Since Manchester United won Group F and Villarreal came in second, they will not play each other again in the Champions League until the quarterfinals at the earliest.

Unfortunately, the first round of redrawn balls pitted United against the Spanish team once again.

Atletico Madrid’s name was read out incorrectly, confirming Bayern Munich as the Liga winners’ opponent despite the fact that the Red Devils were not in the pot for their draw.

After confirming discussions with UEFA, Atletico announced that the draw would be rescheduled.

Just Who did United Sign Up in the End?

United was placed in the first draw against French powerhouse PSG, who advanced from Group A as runners-up to champions City.

Lionel Messi, who left Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who had just signed a £20 million ($27m) deal to return to Old Trafford from Juventus, would have renewed their on-field rivalry in such a match.

In 2019-20, PSG and United met in the group stage of the Champions League. In 2018-19, they met in the round of 16, with United advancing on away goals after a thrilling 3-1 second-leg triumph at Parc des Princes.

Because of technological issues, the draw had to be remade, and this time United was matched with Atletico Madrid and PSG with Real Madrid.
