As one of the best American skiers of all time, Phillip Ferdinand Mahre (born May 10, 1957) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer. With 27 victories, he ranks fourth among American skiers behind only Lindsey Vonn, Mikaela Shiffrin, and Bode Miller.
Over the course of the next three years, Mahre’s career will reach its pinnacle. In the years 1981–1983, he won the World Cup overall title three times in a row, making him the all-time winningest alpine skier.
In 1981, he won his first title by beating off Ingemar Stenmark, who had previously won three straight overall titles from 1976–1978, by a mere six points. In light of Stenmark’s discomfort in the downhill, Mahre’s success in the combined and downhill events was crucial to his victory.
In 1982, Mahre was at the height of his skiing career, winning the overall championship in addition to the giant slalom, slalom, and combined events. Mahre’s 309 points put him in first place, considerably ahead of Stenmark’s 211.
He won eight races and finished on the podium 20 times. Steve’s twin brother, also named Steve, won the World Championship in the giant slalom in Schladming, Austria, and placed third overall with 183 points.
In 1983, Mahre won his second consecutive GS championship and overall championship by a wide margin, defeating Stenmark once again.
